What is the Coronavirus?

Coronavirus is a common type of virus that can cause various respiratory illnesses, including pneumonia. While there are multiple types of coronavirus, it is the 2019 Novel Coronavirus (2019-nCoV) that has been predominantly featured in the news as of late. It is also being referred to as the Wuhan Coronavirus.

Currently, measures are being taken across the globe to help prevent its spread. This ranges from international companies temporarily closing stores in China and flights to and from China being cancelled, to the quarantine of the entire Wuhan area by the Chinese government.

Why is the 2019 Novel Coronavirus Dangerous?

Until more information is collected, it appears the main danger behind the 2019 Novel Coronavirus is simply that it’s new. Humans don’t have antibodies against it, and doctors are still in the process of developing treatments and vaccines.

As of now however, the amount of people sickened and killed by the 2019 Novel Coronavirus is but a fraction of those affected by the more traditional Influenza. Millions are affected by Influenza each year, and tens or hundreds of thousands of people are killed by it.

Should I Be Concerned About the 2019 Novel Coronavirus?

While there have only been a few individuals infected with the 2019 Novel Coronavirus in the United States so far, the cases have been spread throughout different areas of the country.

That being said, you’re much more likely to catch the everyday flu Influenza than you are the coronavirus. Either way, you should absolutely exercise caution in your daily routine, and maintain good hygiene habits to help prevent catching and/or spreading the coronavirus, the flu, or any other virus.

How Can I Avoid the 2019 Novel Coronavirus?

The CDC has provided the following guidelines to help reduce the risk of contracting the 2019 Novel Coronavirus:

Note: The following guidelines have been borrowed directly from the CDC website.

  • Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds, especially after going to the bathroom; before eating; and after blowing your nose, coughing, or sneezing.
  • If soap and water are not readily available, use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer with at least 60% alcohol. Always wash hands with soap and water if hands are visibly dirty.
  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth with unwashed hands.
  • Avoid close contact with people who are sick.
  • Stay home when you are sick.
  • Cover your cough or sneeze with a tissue, then throw the tissue in the trash.
  • Clean and disinfect frequently touched objects and surfaces using a regular household cleaning spray or wipe.
